Teaching and fieldwork

Practice

What I lead beyond the wall: workshops in the dark, retreats of attention and the contemplative practice. Workshop groups and dates go to the list first.

Teaching here is not handing over technique. It is lending a way of looking and giving the camera back to the person.

A day of clear seeing

The first retreat with a set date: a whole Saturday of meditative photography in Atibaia, with twelve people. I lead the practice in the morning and the group curation in the afternoon.

For those who already know how to operate a camera and feel that something is missing. It is not a technique class, and I say so before you pay.

Workshop · in person

Light painting, a whole night

I teach what the dark has taught me since 2009: the flashlight that works, the gesture that draws, how long the camera holds before it all turns to blur. It begins with the tripod on the ground and ends with your first work on the screen.

Small groups, because no one learns in line in the dark. Each person tries, gets it wrong, tries again and leaves with an image of their own, not with class notes.

Walk slowly, photograph little

A photography retreat is not a trip with a camera along. It is a practice of attention in which the photograph comes afterward, as a consequence. You walk slowly, look a lot, press the shutter little.

I went to Bhutan to teach meditative photography and spent six days being taught. That is the measure of what a retreat does: it turns around who is teaching.

Miksang · ongoing practice

Meditative photography

In the Tibetan contemplative tradition, Miksang means good eye. It is the photography of clear perception: you do not look for the image, you perceive something whole, and the camera only confirms what has already happened in the eye.

An individual and group practice, with no posing, with any camera or a phone. I keep its public journal at @fotografiameditativa.

Where the work can appear

Nine editions of the Paraty em Foco festival, from 2006 to 2014, first as a participant and later on a scholarship, in the company of Walter Firmo, Gal Oppido and Renan Cepeda. It was there, in a workshop led by Gal Oppido, that I began drawing with light.

Curators, galleries or spaces that would like to host the works: the conversation starts with the studio, at atelier@willgomes.art.

Tempo Único · in preparation

Duration as property

Each work is a duration that does not repeat: the gesture does not come back, the night does not come back, the file is unique from its origin. Tempo Único, an edition of unique works with verifiable provenance, carries that uniqueness into the digital record.

Still in preparation. When the first edition comes out, it goes first to those on the list.
