I turn the light around an axis and, while the exposure stays open, the circle closes in the dark. Rings, spheres, tunnels and domes come from a gesture repeated by hand, like opening a passage. They are shapes that do not exist in the world, and in the photograph they gain weight, volume and surface.
None of them was made in a studio. I draw these circles on the beach, among the trees, on a narrow road between fields, inside an oca, an Indigenous round house. Altar was made in an oca in Piracanga, around a real fire, and the light came in the way a guest does. The place stays visible, and the light I build has to live alongside the light that was already there. Often someone stands at the center of the halo, still for the whole exposure.
Everything happens in a single exposure, with no digital compositing. The circle you see is the sum of the time the shutter stayed open. The series gathers 35 works, from 2014 to 2023.
